Scalloped Magnet Photo Frame

Create a layered photo frame with a customizable scalloped edge and a simple magnetic closure. The design includes a solid back panel and a matching front frame that connect with four pairs of visible, flush mounted magnets, making it easy to change the photo whenever you like.

Project Overview

Because the magnet openings are cut completely through the material, no engraving or pocket cutting is required. This makes the project faster to produce and keeps the assembly process simple.

Adjust the frame dimensions, corner radius, magnet size, and scallop pattern to create anything from a small keepsake frame to a larger personalized display.

The magnetic design makes it easy to swap photos without tape, clips, or permanent adhesive.

Before Cutting

Measure your material and magnets with calipers whenever possible. Materials sold as 3mm may be slightly thinner or thicker, and magnets can also vary from their listed dimensions.

The magnet openings should hold the magnets securely without requiring excessive force. Cut a small test hole before cutting the entire project.

Not sure which opening size will give your magnets the best fit? Use the Magnet Fit Tester to create a small set of test holes based on your magnet diameter. Cut it from the same material and with the same laser settings as your frame, then use the best fitting hole size in this project.

Installing the Magnets

The magnets are designed to remain visible and sit flush with both surfaces of the acrylic. A 3mm thick magnet installed in 3mm acrylic should fill the opening without extending above or below the material.

Place the front frame and back panel together in their finished orientation.
Insert or stack the magnets through each matching pair of openings so they naturally align.
Mark the matching faces with a removable marker before separating the pieces.
Test the polarity before applying glue. Each magnet in the front frame must attract the corresponding magnet in the back panel.
Apply a very small amount of adhesive around the inside wall of the opening.
Press the magnet into place until both faces are level with the acrylic surfaces.
Remove any excess adhesive immediately.
Allow the adhesive to cure completely before assembling the frame.

A flat scrap of acrylic can be placed over the magnet while pressing it into position. This helps keep the magnet level and prevents it from sitting proud of the frame.

Avoid placing a large amount of glue beneath the magnet. Excess adhesive can keep the magnet from sitting flush or squeeze onto the visible surfaces.

Adhesive Notes

Use an adhesive that is compatible with both the magnets and your chosen material.

For acrylic, avoid using too much thin instant adhesive because the fumes can create a cloudy white haze around the magnet openings.

Apply the smallest amount needed and allow the adhesive to cure completely before assembling the frame.

Faster Cut Only Construction

The magnet openings are full cut holes rather than engraved pockets. This removes the engraving step and can significantly reduce production time, especially when making multiple frames.

The finished magnets remain visible as a functional part of the design.
